Ever since our brave friends gave their daughter The Talk in kindergarten, I’ve been thinking about when I want to have the same conversation with Otis. I don’t want for him to wait until Sixth Grade Sex Ed, but rather have him grow up thinking it’s just a normal, natural part of life. I think we’re BOTH finally ready to have this talk. GULP! What do you think? When do you plan to have The Talk with your kids?
We bought this book on the recommendation of our friends, and it looks great. It explains things in a fairly scientific way, and is pretty kid-friendly so you can look at it with your child. There’s also a version for younger kids or older kids. As a funny aside, after our friends’ daughter learned about reproduction, she thought it was so cool that she wanted to tell EVERYONE about it, and one of her classmates got a thorough lesson before her parents put a stop to it.
Also, I recently heard this story by Tina McElroy Ansa on The Moth about her first time, and I loved it. I hope I am one day brave enough to play this for my kids.

I have the same desire to have my children grow up thinking that sex and reproduction are a normal and natural part of life, and I’ve been thinking more about this as my kindergarten-aged daughter recently expressed curiosity about her body and how it works. I can’t thank you enough for the book recommendations … I’ve been so lost about how to dive into The Talk, and these books look like great jumping points. Thank you!
Yay, good luck! Let me know how it goes, and I’ll make sure to do the same!

just make it so its just you and him though… i remember my older brother (+5 yrs) begging to be in on the talk when mom read the little book to me, and mom had to send him out after he couldnt stop giggling over the sound of “fallopian tubes” and insisting the guy in the first picture looked “exactly like uncle herbert!!” haha…
Thanks for the book recommendation! I have a 4-y-o who asks lots of questions… I also watched the video, what a great story! Thanks for sharing that, too.
good luck! i think our 4-yo is not far behind….
