As much as I wish I were lazing about, eating bonbons and having my feet rubbed (uh, my birthday IS coming, hint hint), I’m trying to take advantage of these sad, last days of my mother’s visit by cleaning, organizing like a fiend, and working in the studio. Here are some recently completed projects:
It seems that every boy in our lives receives a baby man-purse for one birthday or another. This is one that I just finished for our friend named, well, you can guess:
My mantra while making this: “Do a good job on this one, because his mama sewed Otis an excellent quilt which lies draped on his bed at this very moment, and his grandmother is an accomplished seamstress and knitter who seems to make everything cute that he wears. Plus, you are harboring a not-so-secret hope that she will unlock the secrets of Korean cooking for you.”
I tried my hand at embroidery for this project. It was shaky at first, but it got better. I think I actually rather like this project. Do you hear that, Gods of Self-Doubt? I defy you! Here’s a closeup. You can also see how my poor mother has been spending her days: sculpting Playdoh hats for each and every one of Otis’s animals.

A scarf for a friend, who’s going home to a very cold place.
***
A bib for sweet baby Hazel, whose parents run one of the tastiest establishments in town.

When it was almost time for our friend, Emmett, to celebrate his third birthday, we asked him what homemade present he wanted. “A black scarf, like Mama and Baba. But with animals.” I was happy to oblige, and even happier that he made such a specific request:
It’s two rows of animal appliques on fleece, which is a material I feel conflicted about, but which seemed like a good idea for its washability. I was trying designs out, and ended up with enough materials for an extra for Otis:

A denim man-purse for Jack, who’s a big fan of trains (there was a tremendous homemade train cake at his party and everything!):
There are still other projects I’m working on. I’m hoping to get as much done as I can while I still posess my sanity and my nerves. It’s felt good to make some things with my hands, but you know, I still feel a little weird about making presents sometimes. I was talking with a co-worker, and she told me the story about a friend of hers, who wasn’t sure how to tell all her crafty friends that their taste just wasn’t her taste, and would they quit it already with the crappy presents. Sometimes I feel the same way, when I receive a lukewarm response to a homemade present. Now, I mostly ask what a person would prefer, or make things for people whom I know well know to know that they’ll appreciate it, or who have hinted to me in the past. What do you guys do/think about homemade presents?

I will gladly take your homemade presents. that scarf is yummy. i’d love to wrap my two boys up in it. but i think you are right for asking. not everyone has the same taste as the next person. but honestly, who ever doesn’t want your craftiness is crazy! do you sell your stuff?

I’d love to receive some crafty homemade gifts as opposed to another generic, store-bought one, especially if the gifts were as clever as yours. I don’t give homemade gifts only because I never finish them. My sister’s still waiting on a Valentine’s Day scarf (gradient pink yarn) that I started in 2005. I just can’t sit still long enough to finish it!

When it comes to making gifts I think I’m pretty selfish. It makes me feel good making them (and it’s usually cheaper) so I don’t even care if they think it’s hokey. But your gifts are beautiful! You shouldn’t be worried at all.

I’m a big fan of most homemade gifts, especially things like what you’ve done here. As long as things have just a bit of a modern spin on them. I wish I had more time to learn to sew and knit more… In the mean time, I hope my friends don’t mind receiving pottery. : )

As a proud recipient of the homemade gifts (via my spawn), I can say hands down that it is very much appreciated…it’s like we get a little piece of you along with the gift. That’s very hard to accomplish through a store bought gift, and frankly, we get waaaaaay more store bought gifts that do not “fit our aesthetic” than any hand made gift (including the well intentioned life size infamous Christmas Carollers)!

Gawd. Lady, you are so super talented! Anyone would be thrilled to get one of your gifts (or else they have pretty iffy taste). Everything you’ve crafted here is freakin’ adorable.

Beautiful stuff (especially the animal scarf). I’m a huge fan of homemade presents — my mom once knitted me a plain black wool scarf, and it’s one of the only presents from her I’ve actually worn over and over again. This Christmas my stepdad gave us some homemade, canned pasta sauces in a basket, and it was such a wonderful (and yummy) gift. Next year, I think we’ll have a homemade gifts only exchange, and see how it goes.

i would love to get homemade gifts!!! especially your things, they’re supercute. i only ever get them from my mom. i’m actually about to attend a no-presents party for a 3 year old, but my feeling is that they would secretly very happily accept a small homemade present! i’m not going to test them, though.

i’ve never received a homemade gift that i didn’t absolutely lurve, though i’d say you’ve made about 97% of all the homemade gifts i’ve gotten.

oh, the red scarf! I think I’m in love! So bee-u-ti-ful! Good job!

My god woman! Making another person would be sufficient work for most people but here you’ve created a boutique-full of amazing gifts to boot. I would be absolutely thrilled to receive any of your handy work. And I would never refer to it as “crafty,” they are truly works of art.

You need to open an Etsy shop! Those are some cool gifties :-)

Crafty presents all the way! I generally feel like there are so many ways to get a wrong store-bought present but something homemade is always great.

Great pix, thanks. Are those French knots filling out the pencil point?

i adore handmade gifts! But it is the worst when you put love and loads of time (and an aching neck) into something and they give you that look, like “Thanks, but I would really rather an Old Navy gift card.” Uggggghhh… save it for the people who love it. :) It’s better on both ends.
