I guess I’ve been unofficially growing out my hair ever since I cut it. Not that I hate it, really, but I think I’ve finally realized that the texture of my hair makes it so that it will never look how I envision it should look, no matter how much styling and product I (theoretically) use. By the time I realized that I desperately needed a trim, however, it took an additional few weeks to actually book an appointment with my stylist, who, having decided to return to graduate school, only cuts hair on Saturdays.
So when I showed up in her chair last weekend, I was feeling vaguely apologetic, as though the state of my overgrown hair was an insult to her craft. I guess I was feeling a little eager, as well. Trim here here and here, I requested. Get rid of this cowlick, chop off that insouciant kick of the hair. And by the time I left the salon, I looked like this:
Hmm, well it seemed like a good idea when I was describing it to her…
Then I realized that I was no Karen O, and I felt a little like this:
Hmm, in fact, the more I thought about it, the more I felt like a little immigrant girl, fresh off the boat. Case in point:
(a little aside – lately I’ve been obsessed with the thought that one of my eyes is askew, a la Shannen Doherty, but looking at this old picture of me made me realized that I’ve always been like this!)
Here, let’s see the old me and the new me side by side, shall we?
You see my point, despite my sad attempt to sweep my hair to one side.
And here’s another disturbing image:
Yes yes, it’s all full of love and pukable adorableness, but have you noticed that our haircuts now match? Who’s his hairdresser? Me. Maybe one of these days, I’ll start dressing him like me too.

I think you are beautiful but this post had me laughing really hard. You are such a wonderful writer. I too am growing out my hair. I cut it after our daughter turned 1 years old and I regret it. I was only brave enough to cut mine to my shoulders though but I have been SLOWLY growing it ever since. xoxo

I have tears in my eyes reading this post…not sad ones, but ones from laughter. I don’t know what your hair was like before hand so it just looks adorable to me. You are so cute. I’ve reached that point with mine..and my colour..now that is a whole different story!

Hilarious! I do like your haircut….and I can see where Otis gets his “fake” silly smile in your side by side time warp photo.

Awesome post. I love the matching haircuts … it may inspire me to lop off my unkempt mess of hair to match Puga’s current do (sort of a Courtney Love look).
Why is it that stylists expect moms to use product and actually style their hair? I once had a guy almost talk me into a flat iron do. These days, I’m lucky if I can rub in a handful of Curl Conscious (great stuff) or brush out the tangles. Either or, never both.

Wonderful photos – your are both gorgeous – love the matching hair and smiles!

This post is too funny! And CUTE! I love your hairstyle and it looks great on you! And the little girl photo of yourself is sweet too!
I can relate to your feeling about seeing your stylist. I sometimes feel guilty that I couldn’t maintain the “work of art” she created. And I only go every 4 or 5 months, but I always vow to return sooner for “maintenance.” Lies, all lies… =) I’m thinking of going to my sister’s stylist in about 4 months.

You are a beautiful woman with a lovely child and your hairstyle looks great.

When I was in third grade, I had a haircut much like your childhood ‘do, and I never thought it suited me. I think there’s something so extremely neat and angelic about the child-bob. It’s cute, but it always made me feel a little constrained. Your current haircut, though, is much more sophisticated and off-center (and layered?) than the child-bob, and I’d be proud to sport it. There really is a pretty significant difference, especially in the bangs. I think you’re pulling off the Karen O. quite well. Also it’s so much better to be away from the studio photographer and allowed to make faces during a photo shoot.
And as for the undeniable similarities between your hair and Otis’s, let’s face it: you’re lucky. We’d all look like Otis if we could. Or at least I would…

I think this is too cute, especially with your adorable dimples!

Hey, at his age, it’s still okay to have a hairdo like your mom! And you do both look adorable!

I thought it was really cute, and then you showed me the picture of you as a child and I totally cracked up. I still think its cute, but I see your point.
And hey, I have the askew eye thing going too and always have. No one else seems to notice until I point it out.

All three of you are adorable. (And I truly don’t think that your current ‘do looks like either Karen O or the infamous bowl.)

3 things that will make you like your haircut: subtle highlights (to reduce the heaviness of the ‘do), pomade (to add texture and push some parts to the side), and big earrings (to make it funk-ay). Cheers, it looks cute.

You are such a crackup! You’re me want to write my own hair post. I so badly need to get mine cut. I keep telling my hubby that it looks classy (like Vera Wang), but in actuality it looks more like Steve Perry. :(
I love the way you look with short hair. If I could pull it off, I would.

Why do you want to grow it out? I think you look great! The picture of you and Otis is adorable and now we know where he got his great looks.

That hair looks PERFECT on you … and Otis !

ok here’s the real truth – you look older, and less feminine – so sad you cut it — women always say nice things to eachother – oh so cute, nice, etc. – but i’m telling you the straight stuff – from a man

your website is fun. i came across it while looking for Karen O photos because i was thinking of getting a similar haircut today. now i’m not so sure… hahaha my face is much wider and my hair is very limp and super straight. thanks for sharing your story!
